THIRTEEN

It’s not you, it’s me. Okay, it really is you.

“Lucy! Where you going? Come on now, love, We can talk about this!”

But I’m already bursting through the side doors of the van, leaving Lance naked and alone in his captain’s chair. I’ve got my jeans barely tugged on and zipped, my jersey pulled on, one strappy shoe on, the other in my hand. Bra and thong? They’re stuffed in my purse that I’m clutching.

“Lucy, please!” Lance calls out from inside the van that’s now behind me.

I belt out a tearful groan at hearing his voice. I’m listening to his pleas, but I don’t look back. I can’t, now that I’ve come to my senses and realize what a horrific thing I’ve just done. Lance is right. When will I learn my lesson? The only lesson I got is a crash course in whore-ta-culture. I’m as cheap as penny candy.

And why do I have this realization after the consummatory moment when I reached orgasm? What went on with my body? Did my brain and vagina get together and have a pow-wow? I can hear them now . . .

“Okay, I’m the left brain, so I’ll rationalize the hell out of why it’s okay to sleep with him.”

“Good, and I’ll get the rest of the loins throbbing to be ready when he pounces,” the vagina says.

“She’ll never know what hit her! Heh . . . heh . . . heh . . .”

Damn you, loins! Damn you, left brain! And I just know the heart was in on it, too, somehow. Grrr.

“Talk to me, Lucy!” Lance is still calling out to me. Each time he says my name, I let out a small cry. If I don’t run fast enough, he’s gonna catch up to me. He just has to throw on his pants, lope through the parking lot, and he’ll be by my side. I break into a run, if you can call it that. Since I’m wearing only one high-heeled sandal, “thumping up and down” is a more accurate description.

I make it to my car. I’m about to get in, but as expected, Lance suddenly appears by my side, shirtless and beautiful, and breathing heavy after running barefoot through the parking lot. The sheen of sweat glistens on his skin against the low-lying sun.

“Where are you running off to in such a hurry? Please, don’t go like this.”

I’m breathing just as heavy, partly from running, partly from seeing Lance’s tanned muscular shoulders in the light.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

Why should I be the one to say I’m sorry? I was supposed to be manipulating him, remember? Showing him I don’t care. Proving that I can just use him and then cast him aside.

“Well, I won’t apologize for what we just did back there. I won’t let you apologize, either.”

“It’s all too much right now. I don’t know what came over me. We never should have—I mean—I never should have . . .”

Lance takes me by the shoulders and looks me square in the eye.
